Germany's Social Democrats, Greens and Left Party began formal coalition negotiations Monday to form a new government in Berlin, with initial talks focusing on the capital's budget.
Elif Eralp, the Left Party's parliamentary group leader in Berlin, described the first day of negotiations in the state parliament as "very good."
She said discussions focused primarily on the state budget, acknowledging that the challenges facing the prospective coalition were significant.
"But we are convinced that we will set up a solid, long-term budget strategy," Eralp said.
She stressed that the parties aimed to protect social services and public infrastructure for Berlin residents who depend on them while consolidating the budget over the long term.
The three parties launched formal negotiations Monday morning, nearly six weeks after the Sept. 20 election for the Berlin state parliament.
The Left Party emerged as the largest party with 25.7% of the vote but failed to secure an absolute majority in the state parliament.
If the coalition negotiations succeed, Eralp hopes to become Berlin's first governing mayor with a migrant background.
