The Sudanese army took full control of Al-Mazroub in North Kordofan state on Friday after battles with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, a military spokesman said.
“The Sudanese army has taken full control of Al-Mazroub after battles with the Rapid Support Forces,” Mohamed Deidan, spokesman for the army’s special forces, told Anadolu.
Deidan described the capture as an important step in the army’s efforts to cut the RSF’s supply lines, saying the town serves as a link between North Kordofan and West Kordofan states.
He called the advance a major turning point in the fighting in the Kordofan region.
Al-Mazroub lies in northwestern North Kordofan, about 90 kilometers (56 miles) west of Bara.
The local Dar Hamar Emergency Response Room also announced the army’s capture of the town in a statement.
Its spokesman, Azzam Hamed, told Anadolu that taking Al-Mazroub “opens the road for the army to enter West Kordofan state.”
Army personnel posted videos on social media announcing their control of the town.
On Sept. 26, the army announced that it had captured the Um Sharo area in North Kordofan, a day after declaring control of Sodari and saying it had inflicted heavy losses on the RSF.
The army has recently reported sweeping advances across much of North Kordofan following battles with the paramilitary group, announcing control of 11 areas in the state.
North, West and South Kordofan have witnessed clashes between the army and the RSF since Oct. 25 last year.
Sudan has been engulfed in war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced around 13 million, according to UN and international estimates.
