Democrats won control of the US House of Representatives, flipping the chamber from Republicans, US media projected Tuesday.
All 435 House seats are up for election in the midterms, and a party needs 218 for a majority.
According to Associated Press race calls, Democrats have so far picked up 14 Republican-held seats.
The flips came in Kentucky's 6th District, North Carolina’s 11th District, New Jersey’s 7th District, Ohio’s 15th District, and Pennsylvania’s 7th, 8th, and 10th districts.
Additional flips came later in the night from Nebraska’s 2nd District, Missouri’s 2nd District, California’s 1st District and Colorado’s 8th District.
In Ohio, Democrat Don Leonard was elected in the 15th District. In Pennsylvania, Democrats Paige Cognetti and Janelle Stelson won in the 8th and 10th districts, respectively.
In Colorado, Democrat Manny Rutinel was elected in the 8th District, while in California Democrat Mike McGuire was elected in the 1st District.
Later, Democrat Denise Powell was elected in Nebraska’s 2nd District, as Democrat Fred Wellman was elected in Missouri’s 2nd District.
In Iowa, Democrat Christina Bohannan was elected in the 1st District and Democrat Sarah Trone Garriott was elected in the 3rd District.
Republican Rep. Mike Johnson, the current and likely outgoing House speaker, was reelected in Louisiana’s 4th District.
The projected takeover would give Democrats control of the lower chamber of Congress, giving the party greater power to shape the legislative agenda and conduct oversight of the Republican administration in the final two years of President Donald Trump’s term.
Counting continues in races across the country.
